Bug Description
When I start the LiveCD, X by default selects the most painful for the eyes screen resolution my 19" CRT can do: 2048x1536@60Hz. A much less hurting resolution must be selected manually.
I don't know if you can distinguish LCDs from CRTs, but maximum screen resulotion should be limited to those which can be run at 85Hz at least for CRTs. Obviously the strategy for LCDs would be different.

We pick the second-highest resolution for CRTs; this is usually a sensible mode. Detecting LCDs vs CRTs is non-trivial and while we do try to detect it, it's not an easy task (so often goes wrong). Rejecting as I believe the current policy is the best we can currently do; you are always free to change the resolution using the "screen resolution" control panel option.
