Totem doesn't play DVD 5.1 audio

Bug Description

I noticed that with certain DVDs, I wouldn't hear any audio at all, or would hear a short burst of sound followed by silence. Often I could hear the audio on the DVD menu, but not during the feature. After some experimentation, I realized the problem was with 5.1 audio streams. DVDs with stereo audio work fine, while those with 5.1 audio exhibit this problem. My audio output setting in Totem is "Stereo".

Totem played these same discs correctly in 9.10, and VLC (with default pulseaudio output) still plays them fine in Lucid.

I've tried recreated this bug report with libgstreamer-0.10-0 version 0.10.26-1 in Lucid. It took me a while to get the DVD playing since DVD menus don't seem to work but I was able to heard sound through my headphones for a 5.1 channel DVD. My audio output setting in Totem was also "Stereo". Is this still currently and issue for you?

I'm having trouble testing this as well, because DVD menus are broken (this
was working when I filed the bug). Is there a bug open about that?

I tested by manually pointing totem at a .VOB file with 5.1 audio, and it
did produce sound, at least until I tried to seek. When I tried to seek,
playback stopped entirely, and the totem window stopped responding (had to
force quit).

Seeking worked fine on a .VOB with 2 channel audio, so I think there is
still a problem with 5.1 (though it may be different).

A bug regarding DVD menus has been reported in bug 522897.

I tried seeking in a DVD and while playback paused at the new position I was able to press play and get it going again.

What should we do next? Should we open a separate bug about the seeking issue?

Yes Matt, may you please open a new bug about that seeking issue? Please also run totem as: GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 GST_DEBUG=5 totem &> debug.txt ; compress and attach that resulting file to the new report, if you can get a backtrace of that hang that'd be great too. Will look upstream for gstreamer 5.1 issues there and comment back. Thanks all.

I have 10.04 9.10 and XP on my system. 9.10 and XP play DVD's without a problem but 10.04 will not play DVD's in Totem. 10.04 is an update from identical 9.10 systems. I have checked all the dependencies but still cannot get 10.04 to play.
