[karmic] winbind installation causes apt to fail

Bug Description

Binary package hint: winbind

winbind 3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1 installs and works, but nothing involving apt works after it's installed. Update manager doesn't find updates, running sudo apt-get install [any package] fails with a message about "something wicked happened". Reloading the repositories won't connect with any servers, and gives the same "wicked" message.

As soon as winbind is uninstalled, no reboot necessary, apt works fine again.

(I tried to use apport for this, as per instructions, but couldn't get it to report anything.)

I currently don't have winbind installed, so there's nothing relevant in syslog (as far as I can see, which isn't very far!). Which steps should I follow?

Install winbind, get the syslog, or
install winbind, start the service, get the syslog, or
install winbind, start the service, try using apt-get, get the syslog,

or??

I'd try "install winbind, start the service, try using apt-get, get the syslog". Try to get details on why apt fails. Is apt the only thing that fails ?

Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier message. Since I have only ubuntu systems in the house, I didn't actually need winbind, although for some reason I have to use numerical addresses without it. So, since I had a workaround, and other things came up, I sort of forgot all about it. I'll try to test it in the next couple of days to see whether it's still a problem.
