Bug Description
Binary package hint: alsa-base
My original problem was with the microphone not working on my laptop. I do not have a build in microphone so I have to plug in en external one to a 3.5mm jack. In the sound preferences in the Input tab i had Mic1, Mic2, and In line options available but non of them worked. After doing some research I found out that adding "model=auto" to the last line of /etc/modprobe.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on a MSI bare-bone laptop (hence exact model number is unknown).

Hi. Can you please remove the model quirk you have entered into /etc/modprobe. d/alsa- base.conf (i.e. remove the "model=auto" line) & install the "linux- backports- module- alsa-generic" package, then reboot & try testing again. If that doesn't resolve your issue, please see below on how to submit more information to help resolve your problem.
Please include the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of https:/ /wiki.ubuntu. com/DebuggingSo undProblems as separate attachments.
If you are using Jaunty or Karmic this information can be gathered for you automatically using the command apport-collect -p alsa-base BUGNUMBER where BUGNUMBER is the number of the bug you've reported.
