Bug Description

1) Current release : 9.10

2) > apt-cache policy totem
totem:
  Installed: 2.28.2-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 2.28.2-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 2.28.2-0ubuntu3 0

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.28.1-0ubuntu4 0

3) Showing pictures in rapid succession when playing a video
4) Blank screen. Only sound

I made an upgrade, not a clean install, from 9.04 to 9.10. After that, totem will not show pictures when playing video. It plays sound correctly though. This seems to be independent of video format. Identical behaviour for mpg, avi and wmv.

The funny thing is that gxine works correctly. And if I first start gxine and then totem, everything is fine! But I shouldn't have to have gxine running in the background to be able to use totem.

Usually, the lack of video is do to a lack of codecs. Can these videos run just fine on vlc or mplayer? If so, then it is most likely codec related.

vlc affects it the same way as gxine does. Videos run fine in gxine and vlc. They also run fine in totem _if_ I have gxine _or_ vlc running in the background.

I'm not competent enough to conclude anything about codecs from this information.

SInce someone else just reported the same 'exact' problem.

Starting totem in the terminal and pasting the output might be helpful. Also, test different video outputs with this command:
gstreamer-properties

No output from totem when starting from terminal.

gstreamer-properties:
Autodetect does not work.
"X Window System (No Xv)" does work
"X Window System (X11/XShm/Xv)" does not work
