Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice Writer crashes when saving the attached document to .doc format. I reduced the document to its minimal elements, namely one paragraph and one diagram created in OO Draw and pasted from draw with no modifications. The original OO Draw document is also attached.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the attached SaveAs2docCrash.odt document,
2. Go to File -> Save As,
3. Select Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) in the file format drop down box,
4. Click Save.

Expected result:
The document is saved in .doc format, including the embedded diagram.

Actual result:
OO crashes and notifies that the file will be recovered when started next.

I was able to reproduce this bug on kubuntu karmic netbook remix:
1. Opening .odt document with text only and than trying to save in doc format
2. Trying to save new document in doc format

But the bug didn't appear when I pasted the same text in opened . doc document and saved it.

a.ozol - I think you have 2 different bugs there, and I don't think either of them are the same as this one, although it's possible that they are.

I was able to reproduce the original bug report in 2 ways:

1. Opening the attached file SaveAs2docCrash.odt and saving as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format.
2. Opening the attached file CrashTest.odg and copying and pasting the contents into a new Writer document, then copying and pasting the text from SaveAs2docCrash.odt into the new document above the newly pasted diagram, then saving as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format.

@a.azol, @madbiologist: what I am reporting here is specifically the crash in saving SaveAs2docCrash.odt file to .doc (i.e. madbiologist's use case #1).

I originally had the problem with a much larger document so I reduced it to the smallest possible file that would produce the crash and thus narrowed it down to the included diagram. A document that only contains the text can be saved to .doc normally. I provided the CrashTest.odg document as further context in case it can help identify the problem but you can ignore it for the purpose of reproducing the defect.

I clarified the "steps to reproduce" in the description to make it clear.

summary: - OpenOffice Writer crashes when saving document containg diagram as MS
- Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format
+ OpenOffice Writer crashes when saving document with embedded diagram as
+ MS Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format

As per the explanations in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/OpenOffice , I just tested with the Sun version of OpenOffice.org in a VM and it appears that the issue is limited to the Ubuntu build of OO so I will forward upstream to Go-OO.

Minimal .odt document demonstrating the crash

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.7

When saving a file that contains an embedded diagram to MS Word .doc, OO.o Writer crashes and notifies the user that the file will be recovered on next startup.

See the attached .odt file for a minimal use case.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open the attached SaveAs2docCrash.odt document,
2. Go to File -> Save As,
3. Select Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) in the file format drop down box,
4. Click Save.
Actual Results:
OO crashes and notifies that the file will be recovered when started next.

Expected Results:
The document is saved in .doc format, including the embedded diagram.

The bug occurs with the default OO.o install on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.
It does *not* occur with the Sun build of OO.o on Ubuntu 9.10 (same OS, same machine).

I can't reproduce with master branch. It's not even crash with 3.1.1. This maybe an Ubuntu specific bug.

Chris, feel free to reopen if you can still see the bug on Ubuntu.

This seems similar to my bug. When I convert this file to Word 97 etc. it crashes Oo on my computer. It is saved as an .odt. I deleted most of the document leaving what I think may be the problem parts in. OO 3.1.1 OOO310m19 (Build:9420) Karmic NR

Note that both my document as well as Mark's document can be saved to .doc with no problem when using OO.o 3.2 on Lucid so it looks like this bug has been resolved in the latest version of OO.o.
