Look in the top left - notice how fuzzy that icon is. The solution is simple - use a higher-resolution default application icon. This will help in a number of places, such as the application switch and docks.

To be clear, this is the default icon for an application which doesn't provide one.

This bug was reported quite a while ago. Is it still a problem today with 10.10?

I haven't been able to reproduce this, nor can I find the icon in question from searching. If somebody can reproduce this it should be fairly easy to find the icon with 'strace name-of-application | grep png'; from there, the package name can be got and we can ensure that it has a scalable equivalent.
