Bug Description

My computer has an onboard Parallel printer port and an second printer port on a NETMOS pci card
in Karmic (9.10) I cannot print on the printer connected to the PCI card, the printer works fine when connected to the other port.
I've run the live cd of 7.04,7.10,8.04,8.10,9.04 , and i can install and print to the printer connected to the pci card on each .
I've also tried printing to the pci port using a live cd session of 9.10 but it did not work either.

using this post from ubuntufurom.org as a guide ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1304178&highlight=netmos+pci+card ), I collected some information in each live cd session and noticed that in karmic , two ioports are loaded for parport1 but only one in each of the others.

Hi Pelo,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 499915

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

HI Jeremy

Just a quick recap, I wrote you back a few weeks ago to tell you that I
was starting to have problems with my comp and that I could no longuer
trust my motherboard to test for this bug. I've since purchased a new
computer. The upshot is that I can now tell you for certain that this is
definately not a hardware issue since the bug also occurs on the new
comps ( mind you it's still the same PCI parallele printer port card).

I've tested with a clean install of ubuntu 10.04 amd64, and I still
cannot print to a printer connected to the pci parralele printer port
card. lspci reports the card as present and properly identified
I've tested with a live cd session of ubuntu 9.04 amd64 and I can print
without issue.

So we are definately talking about a regression bug on the software side
of things.

This is becomming an even more urgent issue to me since this new
computer does not have any parralelle printer ports on it at all and I'm
going to have to rely exclusively on pci card to connect to my printers.

You may ask why I just don't give up and buy a usb printer :
1- I defy you to find a currently made printer that can print 11x17 (a3)
for a decent price , or a usb dot matrix printer ,and yes I have use for
both.
2- one of the appeals of linux is to be able to use older hardware , new
dot matrix printers are ridiculously expensive and olderones last for
ever so why stop using them.
3- I bought them , they still work so I want to keep using them, so
there :-)

in anycase, I've run the apport command you recommended and it uploaded
to launchpad.

I'm looking into doing the upstream kernel checking but this is a bit
over my head, it does however old some interest since the new computer
run one of those new intel core i5 with the integrated gpu and the
support on the current ubuntu stable kernel is far from 100%.

I'll let you know if I decide to get into it

thanks for the interest in my little problem

as I thought I gave some distros a try , with the live cd,
only got a few to load properly , this comp has very recent hardware

using Fedora 13 running kernel 2.6.33.3-85, I was able to print to a printer connected to the netmos pci parrale port

I'm posting this to reopen this bug, sorry it took so long

Still can'T print on pci parrallele port card , no other parralelle port on this comp, this is the second computer this is happening on since 9.10, 2 diff verson , i386 and amd 64. Considering it seems to work on with non ubuntu/debian distros (Suse for exemple) , I don'T realy expect any changes with the updates , we'll see when the kernel upgrade with the next release

I've had to rebuild a windows box for other purposes ( win xp home updated to sp3) , moved the netmios card to this new box, installed my printers and shared them with my ubuntu box, both printers work fine without any issues, this is definately an issue between ubuntu and pci netmios cards
