Bug Description

http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport

says:

"If you would rather ask questions directly to the Ubuntu Community you can access our live chat IRC channel, just join the channel #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net.

If you are very new to Ubuntu, and haven't used IRC before, find the application 'pidgin' (or on some versions of Ubuntu 'gaim') from Applications->Internet on your Ubuntu desktop. Then login to irc.freenode.net and join the #ubuntu channel."

I'm on Ubuntu Karmic Koala, which comes with Empathy preinstalled instead of pidgin/gaim. So the second paragraph there should perhaps mention Empathy as a possibility, or XChat.

I believe that in Empathy the steps to get on #ubuntu would be:

* Ensure you have the telepathy-idle package installed
* Start Empathy
* In the Accounts wizard (or, using Edit: Accounts) create an IRC account for the server irc.freenode.net, with your preferred nickname
* From the Contact List window, choose Room ▸ Join
* From the Account drop-down list, select the Freenode IRC account
* In the Room text box, type #ubuntu
* Click Join to enter the room

summary: - replace Pidgin with Empathy on ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport

Can not simply replace Pidgin with Empathy -- we still have Pidgin on supported Ubuntu releases.

What is the pre-installed IRC Client on Ubuntu 12.04?

Do we need to talk the user through opening IRC in all versions?

IMO the paragraph "If you are new..." is unnecessary, because there is a really big link to the explanation of what IRC is and how to connect just above it.
Besides that, it also duplicates the information about the channel and server.
In short: just remove the "If you are new..." paragraph.
