Lap hibernates when disconnected from AC power (and no, it's not a battery issue)

Bug Description

My system: Dell Inspiron 600m running Karmic Koala, 2.6.31-16 generic kernel, GNOME 2.28.1

When I disconnect my AC power supply, the laptop goes into suspend or hibernate (my next test will be to see if it thinks the lid is closed, in which case this might be a duplicate bug). This does not happen *every* time I disconnect AC power, but it does happen often enough that it's frustrating/ annoying, probably one out of every three disconnects.

This is *not* a bad battery issue. I can boot the laptop with the battery and it will run just fine, and the battery discharges normally (and will last for almost 2 hours).

This appears to be an issue with handling the event related to disconnecting AC power.

After further testing, it appears that the AC power disconnect is being treated the same as the laptop lid being closed.

May be duplicate of bug 451433?

I resolved this as described in the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/425411/comments/47

Unchecking the "event_when_closed_battery" item seems to have resolved this. The laptop does not shut down or blank the screen when transitioning from AC to battery power any longer.

I am having a similar problem with 9.10 (clean install) on Dell 700m laptop. Power management worked great with 8.10 but with 9.10 whenever I unplug the laptop power adapter, the machine goes into sleep or hibernate (whichever I have set in the power options). This happens regardless of the state of charge of the battery and it happens on both plugging and unplugging the power adapter. The battery is fine and runs for 5 hours.
The first message in dmesg after the unplug is:
[ 287.600663] b44: eth0: powering down PHY
This seems to be initiating the sleep or hibernate action.
I had 8.10 installed on this machine before and never had a problem like this. Power management worked perfectly with sleep and hibernate and I could plug and unplug the power adapter without causing a sleep or hibernate event.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
