Thunderbird running very slow

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Thunderbird seems to have no problems on my Ubuntu 9.10 with the exception that every thing it does needs many seconds to complete (refreshing the application window or opening an e-mail already downloaded). I deleted over 50% of my messages (now they are around 150) and compact folders, with no speedup.
Maybe it is a problem with the video card (ATI RADEON X800SE)?

Is this an IMAP account or a normal POP3 account?

This could be caused because the emails needs to be synced first.
