can't connect user with low UID

I'm using a user with an UID = 510, on gdm with lucid after writing the user name gdm don't ask me for password and chows me the login field again.
Note that I configured a new user with an UID = 1010 and I can login with gdm. Also when I configure gdm to automatic login the user with UID = 510 it succeed.

Yep, I'm getting this to. If a move a uid to below 1000 to prevent them displaying in the user list then there is no password prompt. Hitting enter attempts to login without prompting for password and unsurprisingly fails. (Lucid alpha 1 2.6.32-9-generic #13-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 17 17:02:51 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux)

Lucid amd64 20091222.1 iso booted via grub loopback from hd was the first iso where I was presented with a login screen but could not login. 20091221 was the last iso with which I was able to get to the desktop just fine.

Based on this report I have now tried to add a new user via useradd on the console. The new user got uid 1000 and was able to login. The user ubuntu had uid 999.

Seems like this could be the same bug. I am however also wondering about bug 495304 because after adding my user the login also automatically presented a list which it had not done before.

The immediate source of my problems turned out to be bug 500786.

I may be missing something in bug #500786 but this looks like it effects only the livecd (fix is released in casper 1.211). I still can't login with low user id on an installed system. What I'm seeing is definitely the same as bug #495304. and I think from Nizars original report that this is what he was also experiencing. Marking as duplicate.
