Bug Description

My media server locks and needs to be hard reset after high network traffic, this is usually triggered by rtorrent or another machine connected by sshfs. This was previously occuring on 9.04 with a wired connection so I had downgraded to 8.10 and everything was fine. I recently upgraded to 9.10 with a wireless connection (broadcom) hoping this issue had gone away, but it is still occuring. I switched to a terminal and ran rtorrent and was able to get a picture of the kernel message, it is attached (sorry for the blurriness but it should still be readable). May be related to bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/355155?comments=all or https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/355155?comments=all .

I do have similar result doing Torrent using Transmission using my Wireless Intel card. I've had 4 kernel panic in a very short time, I've forced limit of download speed of 800kb/sec and I hope it doesn't occur again.

It a Dell Latitude 6400
Wireless card is : Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection

It's not just wireless though. I've had the machine hooked up wired for the past week and a half and it still happens if I try to use a torrent. It may have something to do with the number of connections though, because it is hosting a samba share on the local network and accessing that doesn't cause it to freeze.

I have been experiencing this as well over a wireless connection (Intel 5300 AGN) while running Deluge. If I have a few different torrents going at once, I experience a kernel panic. If I limit Deluge to downloading one torrent at a time, it is fine.

I have only observed it while downloading torrents, though that is probably my most "high traffic" activity on my computer.

An update on my experience: I installed the 2.6.31-20 kernel updates this weekend, and today when I had 5 torrents of 150MB+/each running simultaneously, I didn't experience a kernel panic. I will continue to monitor.

Following up on my last post, I experienced another kernel panic when downloading 5 torrents simultaneously this evening. Looks like the kernel update did not resolve.

The issue for me was either the motherboard or cpu. After having upgraded all other parts at one point or another, I upgraded the cpu and motherboard and the issue has gone away.

etrombly,
I am happy to hear that you were able to resolve this issue. For those of you who are experiencing a similar issue, I recommend opening a new bug and supplying the apport collected logging. Even similar issues can be caused by quirks in hardware. The best way for us to address those such issues is to have a look at the specifics of your affected hardware. As such, I will be closing this case as invalid due to the issue being resolved with a hardware update.

Thanks!
