Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

There is no ability to modify actions menu in gdmsetup. This feature was lost when we adopted the new gdmsetup in karmic.

One use case: Administrator does not want children accounts to have ability to shutdown/restart.

The issue is not specific to karmic, lucid has it too, changing the title, the option has not been on the uds discussion list and is not likely to be added back this cycle

Perhaps there is a gconf key that can be used as a workaround. I have discovered but not yet tested:

gconftool-2 -g /apps/gnome-power-manager/general/can_suspend
gconftool-2 -g /apps/gnome-power-manager/general/can_hibernate
gconftool-2 -g /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/power

Sorry, you can safely ignore the "gconftool-2 -g" before each of these gconf paths.

These settings can be set for one user, but not globally for all users. Perhaps there is a way to set the default gconf keys for all newly created users.

The following command removes the Shutdown/Restart menu from the GDM2 Login screen (tested in Lucid 10.04 LTS). To revert, set "true" back to "false" (default).

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons --type bool true
