Official Ubuntu repositories (like karmic-backports where you get digikam), work only with official packages. I will copy digikam/kipi-plugins also to kubuntu-ppa/beta, to ensure that you have packages built with kde 4.4 beta. I will name it ~karmic2 in order to be installable over karmic-backports

No. He's not. He's saying that the KDE from the PPA and the Digikam from
the official archive are incompatible and that he'll get a compatible
Digikam in the PPA, so all you need to do is wait a bit.

I experience the same behaviour with digiKam with KDE SC 4.4 Beta 2 from Kubuntu PPA Backports Beta repository. First, I've tried it on my old collection from digiKam 1.0 Beta 5(?) + KDE SC 4.3.4, next I've renamed digiKam configs in ~/.kde directory so the digiKam configuration wizzard made new ones and at last I've renamed configs and digiKam collection and thumbnail database so everything was newly created. In every case it's the same crash. I can't get digiKam to run.

After that I've tried for the second time cleaning digKam configuration and databases and this time digiKam properly generated new configs and databases and then it worked - I could navigate, open photos, even download photos from camera's SDHC card.
Then I've closed digiKam and tried to open it and... crash.

I have uploaded to kubuntu-ppa/beta backported 1.0 package of digikam and kipi-plugins. I think that when it builds, it should fix the crashers you are seeing (we suspect they are caused by kdegraphics libs ABI changes). Please report back if you still have problems after you get new package.

It's still crashing with digikam_1.0.0-1ubuntu1~karmic1+ppa1_i386.deb. Tried as above - even cleaning configuration and databases didn't help. I've tried 7 times but I didn't get it to run without crash. At 7-th time it completed database creation but crashed at loading.

I wanted to thank you for a quick try to fix and package recompilation but unfortunately as I've said before it haven't fixed my problem. All I can say that my collection worked without problems with digiKam 1.0.0~beta5-1ubuntu1 from official Karmic repository + KDE from 4.3.2 to 4.3.4.

Then I would suspect the problem comes from specific file that is being processed by exiv2 library. The last reported file is: /home/xeros/Obrazy/Zdjecia/INNE/24-06-07_1025.jpg

Was this file/directory added to your collection recently? Can you run "exiv2 <file>" for that file and see if exiv2 command line also has problems?

The file was there from some time and haven't been added recently.

I've done some more digging and I've found simmilar problem with K3B (to get rid of crashes I've removed configs there and it worked to the time I've tried to go to linked directory (link was correct to the existing directory and used had proper permissions for it)).
It looks as KDE 4.4b2 apps might have problems with symbolic links - /home/xeros/Obrazy/Zdjecia and /home/xeros/Obrazy/Zdjecia-Obraz were symbolic links to other directories (on the same partition).

But then I've get rid of symbolic links and moved my photo collection in one directory, removed database and configs and get through configuration wizzard. Database build (photo import) was successfull and digiKam worked without problems so I've closed it and then reopened once more and then... crash.

Now I don't have a clue what's the problem.

I've checked that the file above is there from year 2007 so it shouldn't be a problem.
K3B crash problems are gone as I've get rid of the links in my home directory but digikam is still crashing.

Tomasz, good catch with symbolicy links - kde 4.4 beta2 really had some issue with symbolicy links and KIO slaves. And since digikam uses KIO slaves, it is probably the bug in KDE beta packages that causes problem for you. I think we will need to wait for now KDE 4.4 snapshot (rc1), which is due in next week (iirc).

Tomasz, it may be that your problem with KDE 4.4 beta packages is actually bug 425723
Can you enable karmic-proposed repositories and test with new eglibc package and report your results to that bug?

Thank you very much, Luka! You've solved my problem. Yes, it was bug 425723. After upgrade libc packages from 2.10.1-0ubuntu15 to 2.10.1-0ubuntu16 (from karmic-proposed repository) and reboot digKkam doesn't crash anymore. I've run digiKam 5 times with the new config and databases and 5 times with my old config and databases - everytime it run and worked without crash. In meantime I've noticed that amaroK had the same issue and now it's gone, too. Once more, thank you.
