Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Once I blank a DVDRW using Brasero, the DVD drive is no longer recognised. Blank discs are just not recognised or usable by any CD/DVD writing tool in Ubuntu. I also suspect blank discs are being formatted at the wrong capacity. I know the DVD drive works properly in Windows.

Using: Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.

Not sure if this bug report is in the correct category, but it's a major problem!

Could you get devkit-disks --dump and gvfs-mount -li logs with the dvdrw in the drive when getting the bug too?

affects: gvfs (Ubuntu) → devicekit-disks (Ubuntu)

Don't understand what you mean, as I'm new to Linux.

Not getting any error messages. Once the DVDRW has been blanked, it becomes invisible.

Please open a terminal and copy&paste these two commands:

  gvfs-mount -li > /tmp/gvfs.txt 2>&1 &
  devkit-disks --monitor-detail > /tmp/dkd.txt 2>&1 &
  udevadm monitor --udev -e > /tmp/udev.txt 2>&1

then reproduce the situation, i. e. insert a DVDRW, blank it, and watch it disappear. Then close the terminal, and attach /tmp/gvfs.txt, /tmp/dkd.txt, and /tmp/udev.txt here. Thanks!

I'll try what you said Martin Pitt. Been busy over Christmas, so will get round to it. Hopefully this bug will be fixed by Linux.

Cheers. :)

This may be related to bug #397906 (CD-R blank media), which I am seeing.

Hi, sorry I've not been in touch for a while.

Okay, what would you like me to do? Please give the instructions in plain English as I'm a newbie to Ubuntu and Linux in general.

If this bug is fixed, how will users of Ubuntu and Linux get the fix? I'm guessing it would be via the automatic updating?

@turboload: I described the steps in comment 5.

"open a terminal" -> Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal. The three commands might look like voodoo to you, but you just need to copy&paste them from the web browser into the terminal, and they will just work without modification from you.

Thanks!

For a start, Brasero has the wrong DVD-RW capacity: it says the disc is 2.6GB whereas the packaging in the jewel case says the DVD-RW is 4.7GB.

I've tried attaching the files, but I get an error saying "cannot upload empty file".
