Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

After quitting empathy the status icon doesn't return to its normal state but gets greyed out. Only after a restart does it get back to the normal red (switch like) icon. Pidgin in 9.04 didn't have this problem.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * Could you take a screenshot of the issue?

 This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Yes it is reproducible, it happens every time I use empathy.
The status icon would normally look like screenshot-1. After I start empathy it changes to screenshot-2 and it stays like that as long as empathy is activated. After I quit [Chat>Quit from the Contacts list window] the icon changes to screenshot-3 when it should ideally go back to what it looked like in screenshot-1

This is an indicator session problem. When you quit empathy and have no other sessions open it should go back to the "power" icon.

This is not a bug , the current behavior behavior is designed to behave as such: https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-session/+bug/432635/comments/25

"The current behaviour (in karmic RC) is to display the shutdown icon until your IM status has been set. Once empathy/pidgin connects and sets your status it will change to the status icon."

What is meant by session? Is it when other user/s are logged on?

Vish, parhaps it's not a bug, but it's quite an annoying behaviour in my opinion, it makes the user unaware of the loaded/unloaded status of the IM client. Hope that a change will be considered.

For Lucid, the IM status and the session menu [systems shutdown menu] are separate.

The current implementation as mentioned in the bug 432635 was a temporary solution. It would probably be ported into Karmic as well , when the feature is completed in Lucid.
