sudo aptitude install samba seemed to go O.K. issuing the following command didn't work:

sudo aptitude update, sudo aptitude safe-upgrade done on Dec 11 no help on shares-admin. Do note the Alpha 1 is dated Dec 9.

 * dpkg-query -W -f='${Package} ${Version} ${Source} ${Status}\n' | grep samba
 * shares-admin --gtk-debug

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Neil, thanks for looking at this bug. Unfortunately I tried sudo aptitude update and sudo aptitude safe-upgrade and now gdm desktop won't display. I'm starting a re-install. I've been running earlier lucid right along, and it's dual booted with karmic which works.

Thanks, Jerry

Jerry,
Is problem still reproducible on a fresh install?

Neil, thanks for looking. No, the problem didn't reproduce after the fresh install and aptitude update. Shares-admin works now so the problem can be closed as written however that's done.

Unfortunately the 2.6.32-7 kernel is pretty unstable with the desktop locking up when I try to write this comment. Crl-Alt-F1 still works so I can do a halt & reboot. I'm trying again to make the post from the 2.6.32-5 kernel on the same install so maybe it will work.

Thanks again, Jerry

Jerry - I'm closing this bug now. If your having a problem with the kernel, please double check there isn't already a bug been reported or file your own bug. I'm running Lucid and don't seem to be having these problems your talking about.
Thanks for helping make Ubuntu better!
