UUID changed - root filesystem does not boot

Bug Description
When I upgraded my Karmic system using the upgrade manager and rebooted, I got the following error message:
Ubuntu gave up waiting for root device
It turns out that the UUID of the root filesystem had changed. I don't know why this happened, but I've attached the logfile of the system uupgrade.
I temporarily resolved the issue by editing the boot-menu (by pressing e), removing the search-line, and replacing /dev/disk/
