I am very sorry for the inconvenience. I just need some additional information.

- Can you reproduce the problem?
- I would just like to confirm I have not mis-understood. Could you just confirm there are no error messages reported while launching the Software Manager and no errors occur when exiting the Software Manager?
- Have you tried to add/remove software using the command line? Do you experience any errors?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better!

MXMagic:

The command you entered above only imports the gpg key for the ubuntu-wine project. This allows you to download untested or development software from a Personal Package Archive.

Could you please enter this command into the console and post the results:

sudo apt-get update

This will confirm you are connected, able to download updates from the repositories and there is no system failure that would prevent software-center from functioning properly.

Could you please..

1 - launch the Ubuntu Software Center
2 - Click EDIT from the pulldown
3 - Select Software Sources from the list
4 - Uncheck everything under "Installable from CD-ROM/DVD".
5 - Click on the OTHER SOFTWARE tab
6 - Uncheck all items in the list.
7 - Click CLOSE from the bottom right hand corner of the window
8 - Enter your password and click AUTHENTICATE

The Ubuntu Software Center should update its cache. See if you can still recreate the problem.

If you can recreate the problem then please enter this from the command line:

software-center --debug 2>software-center-debug.txt

Software Center should load and create a debug log. Please attempt to recreate the problem, exit from Software Center then attach the file software-center-debug.txt to this bug report.

Let me know if you experience any problems.

I had the same problem. I downloaded the x64 ISO on (around) launch day, but didn't install until today.

My configuration already matched the steps you had listed. What I did was uncheck and recheck one of the "Downloadable from the Internet" options listed in:

Edit > Software Sources > Ubuntu Software

...which triggered a re-authentication and cache update upon clicking "Close". The cache update solved the problem.

Just so you know the symptoms, I could pull in screenshots (as I assume they're pulled in live) but no data about the applications would appear, nor would the install/update buttons. There was generic "no data could be found" kind of messages in place of the missing app info.

Hope that helps!

========

On a related note, in search of an answer, I checked the (offline) documentation at

Ubuntu Help Center > Topics > Adding, Removing and Updating Applications > Installing an application

Step 3 notes the arrow button that needs to be clicked to continue with the installation process, but step 4 jumps directly over the information I was looking for in order to install the application, which was "where the hell is in the install button?". I don't know what can be done about that, but a mention of where the install button should be on-screen would have been helpful in determining that I did indeed have a problem, and it wasn't just user error.
