I have no idea what the problem is. Could you explain what is a "misc"?

Changed in xorg (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

wonder if it's a virtualbox bug more than in X.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → virtualbox-ose (Ubuntu)

I can confirm this. It only seems to occur when visual effects are enabled in Gnome. For me this happens with Virtualbox 3.1.0 hosting a Lucid guest (daily build). The mouse cursor becomes invisible as soon as the window manager is loaded, however it is still functional in that the desktop responds to the mouse moving around. Disabling visual effects brings the cursor back. Even then the system is unstable and frequently locks up.

The vbox mouse driver also seems to have some issues as it doesn't allow for running without "mouse capture" like it should.

I've tried the bundled guest additions as well as the version in the repository.

My guess is that these are all virtualbox issues but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have some clarity on this bug.

I had the same issue with Lucid in VirtualBox 3.1.4beta2. It only started happening in the last week after I extensively edited xorg.conf to try and get displaylink drivers working. I fixed it by removing everything from xorg.conf except for:

Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "VBoxMouse"
 Driver "vboxmouse"
 Option "CorePointer"
EndSection

Lucid's X doesn't seem to auto-detect the vboxmouse driver, and without it the mouse is blank in VBox when 3d effects are enabled.

summary: - Lucid Lynx alpha in a virtual box -with normal 3d settings no misc
+ Lucid Lynx alpha in a virtual box -with normal 3d settings no mouse
+ cursor

Can confirm it here with Karmic as host and Lucid as Guest, exactly what was written above, the 'workaround' with creating and editing the xorg.conf - file did the trick.
