The platform sniffer is highly flaky

The platform sniffer only works for specific browser/platform combinations. If something is messed up, it fails silently.

I don't see much value in a sniffer, but see it as a potential source of errors and difficulty.

I see great value in it and it's not something we can't handle. I
think it has worked before so it just needs some updating.
