Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.10, german version, all updates applied
A midi-file on gnome desktop is identified as sound file (icon). Double clicking it opens Totem 2.28.2 with GStreamer 0.10.25, but no sound is produced.
Other files (wav, mp3; wmv, avi, asf, mpg) play fine.

Gruß, Gerhard

I can play this file just fine, but no sound is produced.

Are you sure it's not a faulty file?

Can you try the file at http://www.mididatabase.com/20091028/punk/clash/Rock_The_Casbah.mid and report back here?

I apologize for my late answer!

Well, same here - apart from the fact, that "playing just fine" in my terminology means that a sound is produced, not only that the progressbar moves continuosly from left to right ...

This file is playing well under Windows XP either with Windows Media Player V11 or Quicktime 7.6.5 (both with sound).

Clicking on the link you posted
http://www.mididatabase.com/20091028/punk/clash/Rock_The_Casbah.mid
startet totem 2.28.2, using Film-Player, der GStreamer 0.10.25, the file "is playing just fine" in your words, but also no sound is produced.

I have a couple of other files with sound, apart from the logon and logoff-system sound, and all are played well.

Hmm, sounds like a problem with support for the MIDI device on your sound hardware. Can you please attach the ouput of lspci -vvnn to this bug report?

Hi Gerhard,

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 493816

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Trying the upstream kernel resulted in unexpected messages:
For sure I have an AMD processor. System > Systemverwaltung > Systemtest and running the test, having a look at the final report says:
"model AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2000+"
But as you can see on the automated posting #7 above, it was reported a "Architecture: i386"
However, I followed the instructions given on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds?action=show&redirect=KernelMainlineBuilds
i downloaded from the page

Changing to /home/ta30/Downloads# and executing "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" as you told, an errmsg was displayed:

Sorry, but I cannot figure out what is going on. I cannot say exactly, but I think that Ubuntu 8.04 I installed from CD, since then I made only onlineupgrades.

The linked test case above, http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36552278/mid_zuhilfe.mid, is silent. OTOH, a sample from wikimedia, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/55/MIDI_sample.mid, plays fine as long as gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad (which depends on libwildmidi0) is installed.
