Bug Description

Binary package hint: apport

Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit - kernel 2.6.31
After distribution upgrade from ubuntu 9.04 I noticed the system beep was replaced by a system sound.
After some other minor upgrades this system sound has disappeared.
From the sound control panel you can choose and ear it but the system doesn't use it so:
no sound from terminal, no sound from firefox, no sound from thunderbird.
Into the gconf-editor system beep is enabled both in metacity and compiz settings.
All the other sounds work as in the previous version.

Hello, and thank you for reporting this problem. To start off, system beeps in gnome has been replaced by system sounds on purpose. If I remember correctly, it has to do with some changes in the kernel inadvertantly causing many system beeps.

As for your sound trouble, could you please specify what sound card you are using. Also, could you please install the 'linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic' package and reboot. Keep in mind that you may have to unmute devices afterwards. Please let us know how that goes for you.

You can reenable sound effects in System -> Preferences -> Audio. We won't enable them by default, though.

affects: apport (Ubuntu) → gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
summary: - system beep missing
+ system sound missing

This bug report's description is utterly confusing. Are you saying that sound is completely inaudible or that only system sounds are not working? If the former, please use "apport-collect -p alsa-base 493127" in Applications > Accessories > Terminal. If the latter, this definitely isn't a driver issue.

Hello, I installed the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic as
you requested but the system beep doesn't work the same.
The beep in the alsamixer is enabled and the volume is 100%
The sound card is integrated in the M/B and the chip is ALC662 Rev.1.
I repeat again: the driver is correct and I haven't any problem with the
other sounds. Only the system beep doesn't work

Best regards
GM

Did you follow the instructions of Martin Pitt to re-enable the system beeps?

The OP just directed my attention to this bug, which -might- be a duplicate of bug #486154; interested parties might want to take a look at it. (Robert Schroll and I have spent the last three weeks characterizing the multiple problems with the Karmic system bell in that report; I think there are multiple bugs, and he's contributed a couple of workarounds which help but aren't a complete solution. If we're really talking about the same set of problems, I'd recommend marking this bug a dup of bug #486154 and continuing the discussion there.)
