Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

I can't print any file via my printer "Brother HL-2170W", instead I got a paper with the follow context:

PCL XL error
        Subsystem: KERNEL
        Error: MissingData
        Operator: ReadImage
        Position: 12

Sometimes, error message can change, but error still present.
Printer was automatically configured, and appropriate driver was auto selected.

This issue only appear in Ubuntu 9.10, in Ubuntu 9.04 it worked good.
Switching driver (in CUPS) to HL-2140 it works good now (but with quality regression).

Seems CUPS regression.

BTW, forgot to say, if print test page - there's no problem.
But if I try to print any file - I got an error in paper.

P.S. Printer connected via Network (as you can see from info)

I have the exact same problem. Changing protocols (JetDirect, IPP, LP ) makes no difference. Switching to the 2140 driver lets me print images.

I had this problem in the past, then it reappeared after I installed the latest set of updates to Karmic.

Can you try a live CD of Lucid? There a lot of fixes were applied to the pxlmono (PCL XL) driver.

Try also to choose the Brother HL-1030 as printer model, using the hl7x0 driver. This driver uses Brother's proprietary printer language. Perhaps it works also with your printer.

I experienced this bug today, with the original FOSS pxlmono driver.

I recommend installing and using the Brother drivers -- I did so and the printer works flawlessly through the network with it. No more "hiccups." Very nice. If you do it, be sure to follow ALL the instructions and pre-configuration (with LPR and cupswrapper drivers) in order to make it work.

Can someone try to see whether the pxlmono driver works correctly with Brother printers on Lucid?

Can you also try whether your printers work with the model selection Brother HL-1030 and the driver hl7x0 (on any Ubuntu version)?

Thanks.

I have encountered the problem before, but its happening again today. It affects me with PDFs if I print 2 pages/page. If I print 1 page/page, there is a 2 minute delay between each page. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. Oh, and I also have the same printer as in the title.

I didn't see an option for HL-1030 (hl7x0) in my list. There was HL-1030 (hl1250) available and that seemed to work. My problem was a couple PDF files that wouldn't print correctly and just generated the error as detailed by the original poster. Everything else that I've needed to print has worked fine using the HL-2170W selection as model.
