Starting Empathy from panel freezes ubuntu - cold restart needed

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 with latest updates, compiz on Lenovo R61 with Ati Radeon x1400. On the top panel i have Icon from which I can start Empathy or Evolution. When I click to start empathy, whole system freezes. Numlock starts to blink and then I can only power down the laptop.

How come chat software can freeze kernel? I was looking through /var/log/messages and there is nothing strange there before freeze. But there was garbage in one line (probably from power down).

I tried to start from terminal and it is the same.

I have updated kernel minute ago and now it works:

On 2.6.31-15 it wasn't working for last month or two.

This is still the issue. Sometimes works and sometimes blocks whole laptop, and only solution is to power down the laptop.

Can you please try to reproduce this bug with development release of empathy from this ppa https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa and if possible try to reproduce this bug in Lucid beta1 Thanks in advance

Hi,

I added telepathy/ppa update/dist-upgrade/reboot. Then I started empathy from terminal and after a few seconds whole laptop freezes with Caps lock light flashing. It was testing on Ubuntu 9.10

I don't have lucid beta 1. I would have to upgrade or install it in a virtual environment...

After upgrade to 10.04 empathy is working and it doesn't freeze for now.

I think I'm experiencing this bug right now.
First time it happened my notebook woke from sleep and froze.
Before that the notebook worked just fine. I had no issues of this kind.
Always as soon as my wifi connection was established my notebook froze(no reaction to input couldn't change virtual desktop etc.)
When I kill empathy before connection to my wifi everything works just fine. I can surf and download files, no trouble there.
But when I start empathy again and as soon as it displays its connected my computer freezes again and doesn't respond to any input.'

Hi, I'm experencieng this bug too.
With Ubuntu 10.04 64bit with kernel 2.6.32-23-generic.
If I have wifi on, and than I start Empathy Ubuntu freezes and I have to reset the laptop.
If I can give more details let me know.
