Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

1) The version of Ubuntu: Kubuntu 9.10
2) The version of the package you are using: 4:4.3.2-0ubuntu7.1 0
3) What you expected to happen:
The Desktop Environment should display all information it can on any file with the option to increase or limit the verbosity of the output. Minimally it should show size, date modified, and file type, which dolphin does provide. However, additional information is lacking such as dimensions of photos, exif data for photos, author and file statistics for OpenDocument files, encoding for text files, etc. File previews for objects other than text & images would be nice too, I know OpenDocument files are easy to display the thumbnail for.

4) What happened instead:
Dolphin fails to offer any information beyond Size, file type, and file modification timestamp. Searched online found that I had to enable Nepomuck & strigi. Opened System Settings|Advanced|Desktop Search, attempted to enable both and was thrown this error:
Strigi service failed to initialize, most likely due to an installation problem.

I did additional searching and found this work-around:

http://www.aldeby.org/blog/nepomuck-and-stringi-kubuntu-910-strigi-service-failed-to-initialize.html

However the symbolic link did not resolve the issue. This is a configuration that should be enabled by default, and if not, should be trivial to activate. Kubuntu 9.10 ships with important usability defects, but this is a very serious one for increasing user adoption of the platform. The "out-of-the-box" experience is less than stellar without a geek there to do substantial setup and follow-through with the end user. And even then it isn't impressive due to the amount of time spent configuring and installing software to behave as it should in a modern Operating System and as the end user expects.
