gdm restarts Xorg after cancelling login and selecting a user to login

Binary package hint: gdm

After recent updates, gdm restarts Xorg after cancelling login and selecting a user to login.

Steps to reproduce:

1. bring up gdm (reboot or logout)
2. select a user to login to
3. click cancel
4. select user (same or other is fine)

What happens:

5. Xorg restarts, gdm reappears.

I know that Xorg is restarting because nvidia's logo appears.

Expected behavior:

5. Xorg does not restart, and password input box should appear, ready to accept input.

This behavior also occurs when an incorrect password is entered on my fresh installation of Lucid alpha 1.
