Bug Description

Binary package hint: avidemux

This problem has existed ever since avidemux started inserting weird meta tags into encoded video files, i.e. many releases ago. They are as follows:

chanweiyee@Raptor:~$ AtomicParsley "Evan Almighty.mp4" -t
Atom "©nam" contains: Evan Almighty.mp4
Atom "©ART" contains: Avidemux
Atom "©wrt" contains: Avidemux
Atom "©too" contains: Lavf52.37.0

In some files (usually long-playing ones), totem simply does not display any video and audio becomes distorted. Playback is normal when using mplayer.

Meta tags have to be stripped by AtomicParsley before the file can be played back normally.

I've got second thoughts about this problem. It could be file contents other than the meta tags, as some files with the avidemux meta tags do play correctly under totem.

When AtomicParsley inserts or removes tags, it actually creates a new file from the previous file. This process somehow removes what is corrupting the original video file.

@chanweiyee: Can you confirm that this bug still occurs with the latest release (2.5.2~rc) available for Lucid?

Yes, it does. I tried encoding some files with Lucid and the same thing occurred to some files.

I am also sure that it has nothing to do with my hardware. What happened on my old pentium 4 is still occurring on my AMD64 X2 system.

Kindly note that:

1. Some files with the meta tags do play fine under Totem.
2. The problem is restricted to Totem. The "corrupted" files do play well under mplayer or other players, which makes me wonder whether it's really a problem with Totem rather than avidemux.

Thanks.

So this might be related to a totem issue

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.
