Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Upgrading GDM removes customized GDM configuration.

This configuration is now held in ~gdm/.gconf. After upgrading the gdm package, the ~gdm/.gconf directory is empty. Since the new gdm utilizes this area for configuration, upgrading the package removes customizations.

Release details:
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10
Codename: karmic

Package details:
gdm 2.28.1-0ubuntu2 GNOME Display Manager

gdm:
  Installed: 2.28.1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.28.1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.28.1-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.28.1-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

Upgrading this package should leave customizations intact.

Normally the configuration is held in $HOME/.gconf, but apparently is being held somewhere different... Sorry for those details being wrong.

In any case, the configuration was reset upon an upgrade of gdm.

#
# enable GDM banner
sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_enable true

GDM was just upgraded again. I took the opportunity to grab a before-and-after picture of a 'gconftool-2 --dump /'. I'll attach those to the bug report.
