Bug Description
Having never used the ubuntu installer before (9.10) but being a long term linux user and programmer, I have some very negative thoughts about it, if you are interested:

However, more significant than just the uninformative and misleading interface is the fact that "place partitions side by side" left me with this:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 -> 12647 101586996 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 -> 20251 26390 49319550 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 26391 42709 131082367+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 42710 60801 145323990 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 42710 60061 139379908+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 60062 60801 5944018+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
Notice, there is 50+ gb of "unusable free space" left between sda1 and sda2. Based on the previous size, I would say the installer:
1) resized sda2 using it's original start block.
2) resized sda1 using it's original start block, leaving a 50gb hole that is now good for nothing.
The fact that the disk was half empty and only had 3 partitions on it also cries out to me that NO resizing was necessary in the first place. In any case, the purpose of the installer cannot be to just leave big gaps in the partition table, so I am filing this as a BUG.
