Karmic freezes a few seconds after boot

Bug Description

I've just installed Karmic & though the install went fine, it freezes a few seconds after booting up - sometimes before log-in, sometimes after. Once frozen ctrl-alt-bkspace & alt-sysrq-reisub don't work, & I have to power off the computer. It's a Sempron 3000+ with 1.25 GB of RAM & an nVidia GeForce FX graphics card. This happened with Jaunty too. Booting to the shell doesn't help much - it still freezes after about a minute. This might be enough time to run some diagnostics or switch off some processes if someone would be kind enough to suggest what I could do.

Scott, thank you for your bug report. Does this seem to happen if you use the LiveCD of Ubuntu Karmic? If the problem does not occur in that mode, that might be a way we can gather some additional information.

Both on LiveCD & installed to hard disc.

Thanks for your response - I know my report must seem a bit vague, but I'd be happy to do anything that might give more information.

Scott, if you have another computer, could you please verify the integrity of the LiveCD? It is possible that this is a faulty burn.

Scott, now I am really curious...

How about this... could you try some other distro's LiveCD like Fedora's at http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora-all
or Knoppix at http://www.knoppix.net/get.php

If this is successful, then it would give us a starting point to see what might be the issue.

Scott, I did a little searching, and I came across a bug report from a while back where users would notice a freeze happening when the powernow daemon runs. Some suspected that it might be related to frequency scaling issues. Perhaps turning that feature off in the BIOS might help?

Thanks - I'll try both those things tomorrow (it's late now here) & let you know how it goes.

I couldn't find any mention of frequency scaling in my BIOS - I don't think it has it. From the shell I managed to update the kernel 2.6.28-13 between freezes, but that didn't help. One time, howver, I did get an error message, which doesn't happen usually. I reproduce it here :

[258.217890] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 368902c2

I'm also downloading the Knoppix LiveCD to try.

Anyway, can you test Lucid or Maverick to see if this issue is still present? Thanks!
