Bug Description

Binary package hint: wireshark

Since I upgraded to Karmic Koala, my computer freezes once or twice a day. This always happens when I start Wirshark in sudo mode, or when I have Wireshark running. At the same time I have Eclipse open, and I have an Android device connected via usb.

If there's any additional info I can provide, or things I can test or try, please let me know.

After some more testing I find:
If wireshark is running and I connect an Android phone via usb, Ubuntu freezes
If device is connected via usb, and I start Wireshark, Ubuntu freezes.

My computer crashes even with no device connected to usb. It freezes in a way that I can only restart by hitting the power button. Today, the crash also killed my sound.

I get the hard crash. When I am reading or writing from any USB device. sudoing into wireshark does not cause it to crash yet. Starting the live capture results into hard panic without any dump or log trace.

When no USB devices are present I do not get kernel panic and wireshark runs without problems.

This happening on the following systen

uname: 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 17:01:44 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
wireshark : 1.2.2

90% of the time as soon as I go to select an interface to monitor my computer will completely freeze up. I can't even ctrl+alt+f5 into a virtual terminal to kill the app. I have to hard restart my computer.

It may be the problem reported here:

or here:

It's probably a kernel bug.
