It has been a long while since this bug has been reported and since then the reporter hasn't replied. Upstream has already closed the bug due to a lack of rationale and the lack of response. I'm also closing this bug because of the inactivity of the reporter.

Feel free to reopen this bug once you can provide more details.

The assumption should be that the user usually does not intend to interact with unfocused windows. I'd guess that more often than not, placing the cursor over an audio file in an unfocused window is not a good indication that the user has chosen to preview this file. Besides, requiring that the user bring a Nautilus window into focus in order to preview audio files on hover is not a huge requirement. Furthermore, the burden of proof should not be on those who say this odd behavior should be eliminated; the Nautilus project should justify this bug/feature or it should be fixed.

Thank you for your argument! I've passed it upstream.

However, I don't agree that Nautilus should have to defend any feature and function it has. It makes no sense and would only require more work from the developers since they'd have to spend a lot of time defending decisions made a long time ago. If you want to change something, fine, but you do have to provide a reason why it should be changed, as you did here.
