Ubuntu 9.10 already includes eSpeak 1.41.01 (not 1.40.02) on the standard installation CD.

To confirm do the command:
espeak --help

The first line of text output includes the version number.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The error was indeed caused by a corrupted archive (network error, disk error, ...) . Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!
