Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html.

We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

Is this problem reproducible when attempting to install any application or just a specific application?
Do other buttons in the Software-Center function normally?
Would it be possible to take a video of the problem? If so then please attach a video to this bug report.
Do you receive any errors when the application is loading or exiting?

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

Thank you for your help!

I see the same issue, it occurs for all applications listed in the library, none will install and all fail silently. Using Apt-get or synaptic works fine.
All other buttons in the software center seem to work fine, its just the 'install' button and drop down menu item that do nothing.
No errors are reported on screen when loading the application from the desktop "Applications" drop down menu, none are present when closing the application either,

When the application in launched form the console, I see no errors until I click on the "install" button, then I ssee the following (I'm trying to install the "Sun Java 6 Runtime Package"), but I get the identical error for any other application when clicking the 'install' button.

WARNING:root:_on_trans_error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.NotAuthorized: ('system-bus-name', {'name': ':1.61'}) is not authorized: org.debian.apt.install-packages

i can conform adding PPAs reproduces the problem.

Does adding any PPA cause this problem to occur? or is it just one specific PPA you were using?

If it is a PPA causing this problem then I should be able to reproduce the problem and mark the bug confirmed. I will have time to work on this in a few hours.

I am still unable to reproduce the problem using multiple PPA sources with Ubuntu 9.10 i386 Software-Center.

Could you please attach a non-functional copy of your /etc/apt/sources.list so I can reproduce the problem?

Thank you.

I opened software-center from the terminal and this is the error when I hit the Install button:
rui@rui-desktop:~$ software-center
WARNING:root:_on_trans_error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.NotAuthorized: ('system-bus-name', {'name': ':1.59'}) is not authorized: org.debian.apt.install-packages

If I type "sudo software-center" + psw the install button works just fine.

This is leading me to believe that something is wrong in my user account so I went to System/Administration/Users and Groups and the button that unlocks the accounts-management doesn't work either.

Any guesses?

I am still unable to reproduce the problem using the sources-list that you provided.

What happens when you launch the software-center from the command line? Does it provide any feedback? If not then you may need to turn up debugging.

software-center --gst-debug-level=3

I'm attaching my software-center debug info. Maybe it will help

Guys,
I once used resource gnome session instead of normal gnome session and forgot to put my session back to default gnome.
Today I changed back to normal gnome and this fixed the problem.
I checked on other stations and it's reproducible. It's still a bug though.

Rui:

Is the debug information from the machine where the problem has been fixed or from another machine that is still experiencing the problem?

Dave,
The debug info is from the machine that has been fixed after changing session to gnome.

Rui,

I would suggest you open a new bug report for the new machine. Please be sure to attach your sources.list and software-center debug to the new report. This will make the bug report shorter and clearer.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Are you experiencing the same problem with the software-center? It would appear your debug output is describing a different problem than what Rui's output is describing. You may want to consider opening a new bug report and include the output described in comment #19.

I encounter the same problem with a fresh install of the final Lucid.

I am not asked for my password, so nothing happens when I try to install. If I start from the terminal with gksudo it works as advertised:-)

attached: starting software-center from terminal, with gksudo, and with debug level=3

All I did before trying to use software-center after the fresh install was connecting with my wifi with an empty password in seahorse (unsafe storage) ,updating the language packs (dutch), log-off, log-in. If I boot I am logged in automatically.

Oops, I forgot.

I did more before trying to use software-center: I did an update-routine which worked fine, then I tried to install libdvdcss2 from the latest deb package from videolan. Gdebi crashed on me the first two attempts, the third time Gdebi installed the library successfully.
