System randomly freeze.
Hard reboot required. Thinkpad don't respond, nothing respond.

(I had the same problem also whit Mandriva)
The problem append in random moment, using grafical effects, and not.
Nothig is written in log files.
Anyway I attach syslog of when it froze.
Is impossible to use ubuntu in this way.

i use karmic and my system was freezing all the time when i had an external monitor connected to my laptop and a usb infrared keyboard and mouse. it seems to have stopped freezing after i chose "None" for Desktop Effects.

correction:

never mind. my system still freezes even after disabling Visual Effects (compiz). i am using amd's ati video driver:

I tried disabling kwin effects, and i get the same problem.
Any ideas? what log file can i add to help you to solve this bug?
Satheesh (satheesh-rsk) wrote : | #8 |
Probably its worth trying to downgrade x-org to older version. Though I've not tried it, I believe It might help fixing the freezing GUI.
superseba (sseba89) wrote : | #9 |
it's not a problema related just with the GUI all the system freeze. I think IT can be something related with audio. How can i confirm this?
gene (eugenios) wrote : | #10 |
Can you please look in the other logs, like /var/log/kern* and /var/log/messages* I get my logs corrupted during the freezes. I reported this bug #489447. I also have an ATI chip - x200 rc410. I suspect the radeon driver is the culprit in my case
Satheesh (satheesh-rsk) wrote : | #11 |
The first thing is to look at the processes that are consuming more CPU / Memory resources during freezing. Whenever you feel that the system is getting hung / frozen, Can you please open the terminal and issue some performance gathering commands like top, vmstat etc...If you need,I can suggest the following commands,
1. top
2. vmstat 2 5
3. mpstat 2 5 && mpstat -P ALL 2 5 (for individual CPU utilization statistics if you have multiple processors)
4. free
5. ps -e -o pcpu,vsz,
6. ps -e -o vsz,pcpu,
If you can gather these outputs, you can figure out where the system is spending huge amount of resources...This will help finding the culprit :-)
Note: If you don't have any of these utilities installed, you can always install them using "sudo apt-get install sysstat".
zvaral (z-varallyay) wrote : | #12 |
I would like to confirm this bug too!
The system is totally irresponsive during freeze neither remote login is available and the kernel gentle restarter (Alt+SysRq+REISUB ) does not work too.
Some strange lines in the log files (I attached them):

ok my system freeze again ( i don't know why, but now it freeze less often).
Today it freeze ad 10:41:17. The last messages logged date back to 2 second before the freeze.
I create a script to log the thing said by Satheesh (all but not "top" i had problem to log "top").
I also attach the file request by gene.
This time I noticed (I don't now if it happened also the other times) that the "block maiusc led" start to blink( I don't know if it's the correct word, I means that it start turn off and turn on).

I suspect that the problem is with the graphics driver.
ATI driver might be buggy.
I observed that making tasks with more graphical power causes system freeze more frequently. For example switching compiz on I obtain a freeze within a few minutes. Many times it occurs at suspending the machine. If I do not leave any application with extra graphical activity at suspend usually it is successful else not.
superseba (sseba89) wrote : | #17 |
My notebook use a NVIDIA GEFORCE G105M, I have the problem using grafical effects and not using. I have the problem also using the "nv" driver.
gene (eugenios) wrote : | #18 |
superseba, I would suspect your Intel iwlagn kernel module is the culprit. You got some suspicious entries in the kernel log you posted earlier. The driver is known for doing some dirty things. Look at this http://
If freezes happen quite often, you could try disconnecting your wireless and just using wired connection instead. You can do it from by rightclicking your nm-applet and/or unloading the iwlagn module. You may also try finding an alternative to that wireless driver . In may case, I had had frequent system freezes due to a bug in the ath5k module and switched to ath_pci module instead.
good luck
Christian Ide (cide) wrote : | #19 |
My laptop also totally freezes (Alt-SysRq doesn't work) randomly without any log notification. In Jaunty the Intel GMA950 graphics was problematic and also the atheros WLAN chipset (ath5k module). The graphic driver seem to work now but the WLAN connection is quite unstable and randomly disconnects and reconnects. Maybe I try the madwifi drivers again.
Christian Ide (cide) wrote : | #20 |
I compiled the current madwifi driver and replaced ath5k. For two days I hadn't any freeze any more.
superseba (sseba89) wrote : | #21 |
I tried to find more information about intel wifi driver, but i didn't find very much. i just read that from kernel 2.6.24, intel driver are present ( in fact the card works). I just tried to install the last version of the "ucode" but the problem still persists.
(in karmic the driver is at the last version and i've more freezes tha in jaunty)
Sometimes i've the problem also if I'm not connected to a wlan.
Some day it append more often, i don't know why. (e.g. today 4 times, yesterday 0, doing approximately the same things.
What can i do for my card? or to understand the problem?
Christian Ide (cide) wrote : | #22 |
Oh sorry, I didn't read that the Acer 5738G has a WLAN chipset from Intel. I use an Acer 5570Z which has an Atheros WLAN chipset but experience the same behavior of randomly freezing system.
superseba (sseba89) wrote : | #23 |
solved (I think).
I've updated the bios. You can find the latest bios on acer support site.
In this way I solved the freezes and also the system appears faster.
Little problem: you must use windows to update the bios.
p.s. i don't know if we can consider this bug totally solved, because with windows I had no problem.
zvaral (z-varallyay) wrote : | #24 |
My computer works perfectly and reliably with Ubuntu 8.04 either. It's a dream.:-)
Therefore bios update might not be considered the solution of a serious bug in the kernel. Something is missed in the kernel since 2.6.30. Karmic freezes, Lucid freezes and I also tried the alpha of 10.04. It also freezes.
zvaral (z-varallyay) wrote : | #25 |
After a few days of test I can claim that the above discussed issue is completely disappeared from Lucid Lynx 10.04 alpha 2. Therefore this bug can be considered solved but someone else (with other devices than ati card and broadcom wireless chipset) who experienced this problem earlier should confirm this.

Hi superseba,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://
If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-
apport-collect -p linux 489360
Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https:/
Thanks in advance.

On my laptop Ubuntu 10.04 freezes randomly in the same way as 9.10 did. There are no consistent log messages but I think the main problem seems to be the ath5k driver/chipset. The wlan disconnects and reconnects very often. In Jaunty I installed madwifi instead of ath5k for some time during which I hadn't any system freezes. See bug https:/

I cannot upload any info. ubuntu-bug says that it is not a "genuine ubuntu package" after getting me through a series of windows - this is ridiculous!
So the issue that I have both microphone and internal speakers not working with pulse with Realtek ALC861-VD. Those have been always working without pulse.

I think I have a similar problem. After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10 my PS/2 mouse and keyboard would stop working. No Scroll Lock, no Caps Lock, nothing. I could rsh into the machine and do a reboot. I discovered that I could plug in a USB mouse/keyboard and keep working. A co-worker has the same exact HW and we upgraded to 10.04 at the same time, but he says his locks up several times a day even with the USB Mouse/Keyboard.

I too had the same problem with Karmic Koala & am having the same 5738 laptop. When I was using Ubuntu 9.04, I didn't have any issues & was working pretty fine. However as soon as I upgraded distro to 9.10 (a big mistake that I still repent), my torrid time began! The kernel 2.6.30.x is really having issues with the video card & 2.6.28.x was the one that I booted to successfully but with extreme slowness in video performance. Xorg, the X Window System, was found to be the culprit & consumes more than 90% of CPU resources, quite unbelievably!!! And detecting sound cards is another headache with Karmic which I was tired of troubleshooting! Finally I got rid of Karmic & installed Jaunty again but now with a change of theme & great tweaks, in the form of great Linux Mint 7 which I'm thoroughly satisfied with now!!! Overall both video & audio needs to be fine tuned in Karmic... Without that the most beautiful look alone isn't worth sticking to it....
