I tried to upgrade to Alsa 1.0.21 following the instructions provided, and the upgrade apparently didn't happen.

Hi, normally we prefer people to use "ubuntu-bug" or "apport-collect" but alsa-info.sh gives ok information as well. First, is it the (on-board) HDA or the AudioPhile card that does not work? For Audiophile, I recall you might have to change the channel mapping: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats#Alternate%20channel%20mappings%20needed%20for%20ICE1712
Also, the "DAC" mixer control was at zero, try raising it in alsamixer.

Thank you for responding. I am still having difficulties here.

At first I had no sound output from Ubuntu 9.10, although the soundcard
was good (it played fine in Windows and in Jaunty Jack).
I found instructions for upgrading the Alsa 1.0.20 file to 1.0.21. That
worked to get me sound from internet sources (You Tube) and from
playbacks of Audacity recordings on my hard drive.
MP3 s also will play if imported into and played through Audacity.

However, I can get no regular mp3 files to play, either from mp3 files
on the hard drive or from CDs. I have tried using RhythmBox as well as
other mp3 player software. But get no sound.

Is it the onboard sound (HDA Intel) you need help with, or the MAudio Audiophile 2496 card?

It was not getting sound into either.
I appreciate your responding so well, but I finally gave up and
reinstalled Jaunty Jackalope. Koala is way too buggy. In addition to
the sound problem, I was having keyboard freeze issues.
I honestly think this release was a huge mistake that's going to damage
the reputation of Ubuntu.

Now that I'm back with a flawlessly working 9.04, I'm happy again.
