Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

-You should be able to make an auto hidden panel show up when you mouse over the edge of the hidden panel.
-Instead of the above described behavior which can be observed with the bottom and the top panel, a right and/or the left panel stays hidden no matter what you do.
Steps to reproduce:
1)Go to System->Preferences->Appearance ->Visual Effects and select 'Extra'
2)Make sure that you have installed the Advanced CompizConfig Settings Manager package.
3)Go to System->Preferences->Appearance ->CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable "Desktop Cube" and "Rotate Cube"
4)Create a new panel
5)Right click on it and open properties
6)Set orientation to be right or left (side panels)
7)Select autohide
8)Close the 'Panel Properties' window
(the panel should hide now)
9)Try to 'mouse over' the panel to make it show up.
It just won't show up.
10)Try to check-uncheck the options "Edge Flip Pointer", "Edger Flip Move", "Edge Flip DnD" in the submenu for the "Rotate Cube" effect and attempt to unhide the hidden panel. In my case nothing changed this way.
The only way to see an auto hidden side panel is to right click on a launcher from an other panel, select move and move it to the hidden panel.

There are VIDEOS attached, showing the problem in detail.

The problem is related with the compiz feature 'rotate cube' and maybe other similar features that move you around multiple desktops e.g. desktop wall etc. As you can see in the video attached (gnome-panel+compiz_bug.ogv) it doesn't matter if you have enabled or not individual options like "Edge Flip Pointer", "Edger Flip Move", "Edge Flip DnD".

In the video titled "THE-EXPECTED-BEHAVIOR(8.04)" you can see the normally expected behavior as it really was using Hardy Heron. The two features, normally, are not incompatible.

This is (mostly) a problem with the compiz cube plugin and probably won't ever get fixed but I'll leave this bug open for now in case someone wants to look at it.

Thanks for taking the time to triage the bug Travis. BUT. As you can see here:

As so, the BUG I reported, can't be of wishlist importance.
It is clear in this:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36147216/THE-EXPECTED-BEHAVIOR%288.04%29
video that we are talking about an old feature (in Ubuntu 8.04) that no longer works
as it should work (in Ubuntu 9.10) due to a new bug.

I would triage this bug as a bug of low importance.

Please, someone suitably privileged, change it according the above explanation.

It actually would require a new feature in the cube plugin to work, thus Wishlist. However, we are not going to do this for Ubuntu and upstream won't do it because they consider it a hack so I'm just going to close the bug.

Why is it a NEW feature? What changed since Ubuntu 8.04. It is a broken OLD feature. Didn't you saw the video?

You should not insist that this won't get fixed deciding this by yourself. You should let the community decide. Leave it open for some time until more community members have the opportunity to tell their opinion. Since there is a disagreement, I wouldn't keep on changing the status or the importance according to what I think (even if I had the needed privileges). Please do the same: Just let the community decide. Just set the importance to undecided.

Please, remember the code of conduct you've signed.

"" '''When you disagree,''' consult others. Disagreements, both
political and technical, happen all the time and the Ubuntu
community is no exception. The important goal is not to avoid
disagreements or differing views but to resolve them
constructively. You should turn to the community and to the
community process to seek advice and to resolve
      disagreements. [.......] ""

Despite of the last post was old, I have the same issue with Ubuntu 10.10.
RodGer, I found a temporally fix to use a side panel with compiz+cube+rotate cube.
I think that the problem is that exist two actions associated with put the mouse over the side of the screen.
If you looking for bindings "Rotate Flip Left" and "Rotate Flip Right" in the config section of "Rotate Cube" plugin, you can find these actions associated with left and right side. If you disable these bindings, you are allow to use it to show the panel in the side.
These two bindings are enable despite of the option "Edge Flip Pointer" are disable and create a conflict with the action to shows the side panel.
Considering that this option is disabled by default, may be the fix will be set this two bindings as "None". And when this option are enable, show a warning message if you have some side panel.
I hope it was be helpful.
Regards

I found solution, i my case it was due to desktop wall plugin in CCSM. Open compizconfig settings manager (CCSM) go to desktop wall, then 3rd tab "bindings" open "edge flipping" properties and set to none what you want
