Bug Description

Symptom: the CD stops playing; pressing play again starts again from the beginning of the CD.
Probable cause: some daemon trying to access the drive.

Seemed to happen just once about 5 minutes in with my cd drive (hdb, same channel as hard drive), but repeatedly on my DVD drive (hdc, lone master of ide channel 2).

I understand the gnome side of ubuntu is defaulting to digital playback (via the IDE cable instead of the patch cable) since its way to hard to work out whether the patch cable is connected or not - which I respect. I just happen to have a /real/ cd drive with headphone socket, volume control and a play/skip track button on the drive next to stop/eject, and I like to make use of them. Apart from anything else the headphone socket is in a much more convenient place :-).

This issue may also affect people suffering from the gnome-media bug (see #13609) which kills realtime digital extraction of CD audio, if they switch to playback via the patch cable to solve the problem.

Can we find out what daemon is doing this, and get it to stop, at least while a CD is being played?

I'm revising for exams at the moment so I've just switched to digital playback for the moment, but didn't see any harm in reporting this now.

Hi, Thanks for reporting this bug. To assist you further I will need to know which package you are using to play your audio (so that I can set an appropriate package) and which CD drive you are using.

I can confirm this:

kscd and any other program starting an audio cdrom to playback via audio patch cable, e.g. cdplay (from cdtools package) is affected.

cd playback stops.
I could reproduce kio_audiocd from kdemultimedia-kio-plugins being responsible, when shutting down itself.

Please read http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122524, where I reported more stuff to KDE devel bugs page.

Hope this helps to track the problem.

Quick hotfix: deinstall kdemultimedia-kio-plugins
sudo aptitude -R purge kdemultimedia-kio-plugins

Does this still happen with Kscd (KDE4)?
