Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Karmic desktop completely frozen (mouse and keyboard) after enabling Compiz Reflection plug-in in a Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook with an Intel 965 GM video controller. The problem persisted (no mouse, no keyboard) after turning the computer off and rebooting. The problem could not be fixed even uninstalling (apt-get purge) Compiz in a recovery mode boot. System rendered unusable.

Steps to reproduce:

1- Boot the Karmic Live CD.
2- Open System -> Administration -> Software Sources.
3- Enable the Universe repository and reload package information.
4- Install Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (cssm) in Ubuntu Software Center.
5- Open System -> Preferences -> CompizConfig Settings Manager
6- Enable the Reflection plug-in and the destop immediately freezes.
