WiFi wireless signal strength meter indicates no connection with some hotspots on karmic

Bug Description

Upon successful connection to a WiFi access point, the signal strength meter on the top panel does not always show the strength of the connection. This does not affect the ability to use the wireless network.

The signal meter works appropriately on most access points, but not on the two Linksys WPA2-enabled access points I've been able to test with - instead, it displays no signal.

Bug is consistent in Ubuntu 9.10 (Netbook Remix) and Ubuntu 9.04 (Netbook Remix).

Wireless card:
01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

This is a low priority defect, as it's only the visual display of signal information that doesn't work; the network features work well.

I just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 (both remix), and now I have this problem on my wifi. So it shows an wifi icon that shows no signal, but the signal is high if you look in the dropdown of avalible networks.

This worked fine in 9.10. Driver is wl.

Hi proteus,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 488402

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello. I'm using Lucid Lynx here with a Broadcom STA wireless driver (proprietary) enabled.
dmesg | grep Broadcom
eth0: attached PHY driver [Broadcom BCM57780] (mii_bus:phy_addr=100:01)
eth0: Broadcom BCM4357 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller 5.60.48.36

The system has the same problem as the others reported here. I can see the strength of the nearby networks in the selection list but after connecting the radar shows a red exclamation mark although I have a working connection. The tooltip upon the icon says that the wireless network connection is active as well.
