Bug Description

The sequence of screenshots illustrate the behaviour. Here I exemplify that I want to
open a file with "gedit" which, of course, is my path, and loadable with Alf-F2, for instance.

However, if I choose "Open with another application", I go to a selection screen that doesn't
have the intelligence of the Alt-F2 dialog, and I need to put the full path of the application
in order to be able to open the file. In this case, it would be "/usr/bin/gedit". Of course, new
users won't know this and won't be able to open the file with this text editor.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in nautilus.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu and its file manager Nautilus better by reporting this bug. I'm marking this as Triaged since I can confirm this and it's clear what needs to be done. Since I feel this is a usability issue rather than a feature request I'm setting the status to Low.
I'm checking upstream to see if it has already been reported there and will create a new report there if necessary.

Changed in nautilus (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Triaged

Nautilus has nothing to do with this dialog. In fact, this is a long standing Firefox bug, and is reported separately at bug 18995

I'm unmarking this bug as a duplicate since it is also an issue with the "Open with" dialogue of Nautilus.

(A small issue: please don't mark duplicates as Invalid because strictly speaking they aren't Invalid. Furthermore, it creates the need for another action when unmarking a bug as duplicate.)

The screenshots for the original bug here clearly show the Firefox Open with dialog, which is bug 18995!

We've resolved this on IRC now - the Nautilus dialog doesn't appear to have this issue, and the dialog shown here is the Firefox one.
