Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic

nVidia MCP79 ethernet interface fails to operate correctly. Network manager should take notice when I plugin/unplug a network cable, and it does not. When cable is plugged in, dhclient fails to get address and simply attempts to send DHCPDISCOVER packets (and receives no response). My switch link light is active when cord is plugged in, but there is no link light on the NIC.

By all appearances, this device should work, but it fails to acknowledge the cable's presence and therefore obtain an address on my network.

I purchased a USB wireless adapter and had been using that, and I guess the issue was fixed in some update because I'm no longer having the issue. I plug into the same network I was using before, and the problem has been resolved (for me). I still don't have a link light on the port, but I don't mind as long as I can get on.

Hi ihtarlik,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 488133

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
