Bug Description

After the decision to remove Gimp from Lucid default CD has been announced there where many discussion about this. F-Spot isn't really a good alternative, because it lacks some Basic Functions.

Why not using GNU Paint as a small, fast and Beginner-friendly replacement? It has everything to be a kind of "MS-Paint", a simple to use tool, even for Beginners. Also, it is in the main-repos already.

Absolutely agree. If Gimp goes out we will miss a paint-program in the complete package. Nathive looks like a good alternative, but it's still "alpha". GNU Paint is maybe at moment the best alternative... unfortunately the look isn't polish enough. If we can't find a alternative for Gimp - Gimp has to stay!

I do agree the bug report and scholli. It should not be a hole after a Gimp delocation. GnuPaint doesn't looks like the perfectly alternetive for Gimp. But if it's not Gimp has to stay.

Absolutely agree, something like MS-Paint should be included in Ubuntu.

Thank you for taking the time to make ubuntu better.
The gimp is a photoshop replacement we are removing it for very valid reasons. Most people only use editing software to touch up pictures and that can be done in F-Spot. I am marking this bug as invalid. We talked for a long time about this issue and we know not everyone will agree but you can still install it via the software center or synaptic.

@ shane fagan:

Very valid reasons yes, but F-Spot isn't valid enough to touch up pictures. There is no possibilities for include (delete) pixels like lines, text, boxes etc. F-Spot is not a paint-program. If Gimp has to go out, it should be changed by another, but more simple, one. Otherwise Ubuntu isn't a Full-Package-Operating-System no more... it's missing a program for moving some pixels if somebody needs it.

For better understand:
Somebody takes a screenshot or want to manipulate a photo with some circles, lines and text. That person won't find nothing for do it in the menus. If this person is in a place without internet, he can't download a usable program for it. So he/she can't do his work and feels limited.

It's a very simple example, but it shows the anger what peoples can got from this decision. I think it's important to find a alternative raster-program, simple, but included by the first start after installing Ubuntu ... It's not invalid - in my opinion it's important and a usability-issue.

I think there is some communication mismatch.

As far as I understand, Gimp will not be "removed" from Ubuntu, it will just not be included in a default installation and not included on the LiveCDs. Anybody with internet access can install it like any other package that is not immediately included in the default installation.

Maybe this can be clarified somewhere centrally so that users are not concerned about this step, as it does not affect anybody who is using Gimp right now!! Everybody can still continue using it as he/she likes!

F-Spot is not a Pixel-Manipulating-Software, it's a Photo-Collector and Photo-Improver. Lucid wanna be without a Application for painting, not even a simple one.

A week ago I was on a journey with my Netbook. Here I have installed Karmic Remix and never noticed that Gimp isn't on board. Than had to do some simple picture manipulations and I couldn't. There was no Internet and I got very frustrated. I am appealing that in change of Gimp we need a simpler alternative installed ... like Windows and that simple application called MS-Paint. For moments, never knows!

I cannot understand how anyone can try to use F-Spot for Image-Manipulation? F-Spot isn't meant for that, it is a tool to have an overview about your Image-collections. And as said above, it lacks some basically Functions like making an arrow or draw a line.

F-Spot is no alternative.

Hmm... I guess there's no room for discuss this. I'm looking forward and think we will see how things will went in Lucids development process. It's Ok that Gimp will not be included on the CD, but I really hope it stays in Main-repos and that there will be a wiser decision than taking F-Spot as Replacement.
