Dapper upgrade "Could not install 'Samba' "

Bug Description

The following warnings were encountered during upgrade to dapper:

Could not install "Samba"
The upgrade aborts now. Please report this bug.
Subprocess post-installation script returned
error exit status 102

Could not install the upgrades
The ubdate aborts now. Your system can be in an unusable state. A recovery was run (dpkg-configure -a)
Install Archives() failed

From the dist-upgrade-term.log:

Errors were encountered while processing:
 samba
dapper: Fatal IO error 9 (Bad file descriptor) on X server :0.0.
Setting up samba (3.0.22-1ubuntu3) ...
update-rc.d: warning: /etc/rc2.d/K09samba is not a link to ../init.d/samba or /etc/init.d/samba
update-rc.d: warning: /etc/rc3.d/K09samba is not a link to ../init.d/samba or /etc/init.d/samba
invoke-rc.d: dangling symlink: /etc/rc2.d/K09samba
dpkg: error processing samba (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 102

I've had the same problem while upgrading from 5.10 to 6.06 while using apt-get dist-upgrade. Fortunately, all other packets were upgraded correctly.

After the problem, I was unable even to remove or upgrade samba (or any other package), because apt-get/dpkg would always abort with the above error in the middle of the operation.

I had to manually 'sudo rm' both /etc/rc3.d/K09samba and /etc/rc2.d/K09samba (both pointed to '/samba') in order to be able to do a successful 'apt-get remove samba' followed by an 'apt-get install samba' again.
