Bug Description

Binary package hint: usb-creator

Hi to all.

Just used usb-creator-gtk to host an Ubuntu 9.10 live iso

My problem is that, once the iso image has been loaded, after unplugging the usb stick it doesn't work anymore.
Tree computers are unable to recognize it while on the other hand do recognize all of the other usb sticks I own.

lsusb doesn't recognize the usb stick.

Possibile cause of the problem is that I formatted both /dev/sdc and /dev/sdc1 partitions instead of just /dev/sdc1
isn't it?

Thanks for your attention.

Please try removing all partitions on the key using gparted, then run usb-creator on that disk.

Does this resolve the problem?

If not please upload ~/.usbcreator.log and run the following command:
$ apport-collect 486754

Thanks for your reply.

The requested file is attached and then I'll run that command.
First of all, I'd like to highlight I reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch so the attached file refers to the old system (I recovered that log file from a backup).

Also, GParted does not list the pen drive into its device list. I supposed GParted was not able to list it since the device seems to be dead: no more lights on when plugging it into any USB port.

I have just run that "apport-collect" command on my new system.
As I said, I backuped all of my file system and so I still have got the home partition.
Please ask me to recover any file from my old system, just in case.

Thanks for your time.
Regards.

Is it possible that your usb stick hardware is physically damaged?

This could be due to unplugging it prematurely without unmounting it first. This has happened to me and is not software related to usb-creator, but an issue with education of the process necessary to safely eject a usb disk device. If you find that you can no longer format this one USB stick in any operating system, I think it is safe to say that the hardware is damaged and that you should contact the manufacturer of the removable storage device.

Hi komputes.

I do care of USB sticks and I always "safely remove" them before ejecting.

I suppose the hardware has been damaged by usb-creator since it was perfectly working just before using it.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Regards.

I'm not sure how this can be objectively verified without reproducing the issue (which I am not able to do). Let's wait to see if anyone else reports a similar problem to confirm this bug.

Well, I get to that conclusion since I opened the pen drive to see if it contained important data before formatting it through usb-creator...
