Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.10.

Make panel with MenuBar applet ("Application, Places, System") as Right oriented. And text become vertical oriented- it is not convenient to read and space consuming.

Is it possible to create an option to show Icons instead of Text, to satisfy users who likes vertical menu layout?

You can look at Xubuntu (XFCE) panel as for example - it make sense, and very useful as an option, and every one is satisfied.

Thank you for your suggestion. Are you suggesting the three menus be combined, the text in the menus be shifted to the right, or the menus to the right? Please be specific to help us understand what you are suggesting.

Thanks, for answer. Here is explanations:

Screenshot-2.png - is how it looks like by default. Very convenient for user that accustom to horizontal panels.

Screenshot-3.png - is how it looks like then panel is Right/Left oriented. It takes to much space, and not very convenient to look at it.

What is an option to improve the situation: is to have an option to show Images instead of the text "Application" "Places" "System". To show three images instead with corresponding tooltips. It would be beneficial for any layout and for any user.

There many users use vertical menu to economize Horizontal height, as majority of displays are Wide, and as result have plenty of horizontal space that is not used properly. We do not want to instill our habits to others, and just need option to satisfy our preferences.
Experienced users is familiar with these three menu items("Application" "Places" "System") an no need to them to have them in Text format, images will suffice.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Natty Narwhal. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu.

With Natty Narwhal moving to Unity, and the changes to the desktop, we would like to know if this is still an issue. Natty is using icons instead of text.

You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
