Background images do not appear.

After Ubuntu 9.10 boots up, there is no background image, just a black blank screen. The toolbar menus show up without a problem. I've never seen this with previous versions of Ubuntu and I'm using the same computer. I tried changing the background but, it doesn't show. When I shutdown, the screen will flash with the background.

Is this problem present with the latest updated Karmic's, Lucid's or Maverick's packages?
