xane crashes with error with hp scanjet 2400 flatbed scanner

hp 2400 scanner - xsane / scanimage gives errors

I'm using driver for the HP scanjet 2400 Flat bed scanner from www.elcot.in
It worked fine in ubuntu 8.10 (sometimes gives segmentation fault error but reinstalling driver solves it )
but in ubuntu 9.10 this gives errors.
XSane is finding this device it gives the error:

Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) kernel : 2.6.31-14-generic , Pentium 4 CPU 1.70GHz, 224MB Ram
xsane 0.996 and all updates installed.

I've recently made a PPA with packaged elcot's driver.

You might try to use it: https://launchpad.net/~lion-simba/+archive/hp2400

I've installed the scanner with Alexey PPA (https://launchpad.net/~lion-simba/+archive/hp2400), everything works great with xsane and simple scan, but I need to use my scanner from java, so I have this example from mmscomputing (http://www.mms-computing.co.uk/uk/co/mmscomputing/device/sane/applet/index.php) and throws me:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/bin/java: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hp2400.so.1: undefined symbol: sanei_init_debug

Hello,
I was about to install the ELCOT driver for HP SJ 2400 but noticed that it was going to install libsane. Did not proceed with ELCOT any further. Just did "sudo apt-get install libsane" and voila—prob solved!

As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases your release is EOL.

If you have an issue in a supported release (ex. 16.04) please file a new report, and feel free to subscribe me to it.
